Gophers wins 1st US Open title

 

First Timer's League Weekly Recap Gophers wins 1st US Open title Needs 2 more to complete career grand slam   This win was a statement. Gophers wanted to send a message to the league and he made sure it read loud and clear. "I'm still here." The 3 time Jackson Cup champ has had a roller coaster season so far but his victory at the US Open sent a warning short across the bow of the First Timers League.    He's back up into 6th place now after falling to 13th several weeks ago and has hopes of regaining his 3rd place position from week 15. He's on the right track now and just needs to avoid the cut line from here on out.   Gophers now has 13 Top 10s, 5 Top 3s and 2 wins. He leads the Summer Segment after just one week and only 1 other team has ever won the opening week and gone on to win the whole segment - his nemesis Kings Deer.    He heads into this week's Travelers Insurance Open as the defending champ and his confidence is sky high. TOP 10 FINISH Several family duos made an apperance inside the Top 10 together as One Iron snagged second while his brother Smooth Greens got himself into solo 7th. One Iron very nearly took down his first win in a big way but will have to wait on that. Smooth Greens keeps plugging away and holding down a Top 10 spot as he currently sits in 10th overall.    617 to 616 held the lead for a short while at Torrey Pines but he faded just slightly down the stretch finishing in 3rd. It's his 3rd Top 3 though which is good enough for T6 in that category for the season.   Kikakee snagged his 8th Top 10 while his kinsman Oh Geez also grabbed his 8th Top 10. Both are light on Top 3s though (1 and 2 total, respectively) so it's clear this is where the work needs to be put in. Oh Geez is now the only team left who's 3-for-3 in Top 10s in the majors. One more to go.    Bag Lady and Bmerk slid into a tie for 5th place to score their second Top 10 in a major this season. Bmerk is working to get back into contention for the season while Bag Lady has put togerher a solid few weeks in a row.  Grandpa Levs joins the club of 2 out of 3 Top 10s in majors this season which is a pretty decent track record. In 2020 in won the sole major during the shortened season - PGA Championship - so knows how to perform at big events.  OffConstantly is still looking for a paycheck in his rookie season but he'll settle for his first Top 10 in a major instead. It's no consolation but it's a solid finish which belies grander things to come - a good sign when there's so much money in the final segment.    The Race for the Jackson Cup continues to be a tight one as Halve Ouimet maintained his lead but ByeBye Birdie, 617 to 616 and several others are lurking not far off. There's sure to be significant jockying for final position in the coming weeks as no one wants to miss out on a payday by a single spot.  And just like that the race to $1,000 titled significantly in Gophers' favor as he is now just $13 shy of beating Kings Deer to the mark. The one thing Kings has going for him is that he is the only player ever to win four tournaments in a row... anything is possible.  STAT OF THE WEEK If you can figure out how to finish inside the Top 3 consistently that will eventually translate to fantasy success.  The boys of never-ending-summer head to Connecticut - the only event held in the Land of Steady Habits State - for the Travelers Insurance Open. Many will remember this event's biggest highlight when Jordan Spieth beat Daniel Burger on the first playoff hole by chipping in from the bunker.    There's plenty of talent in the field just one week removed from the US Open. The question is how many teams will put Garrick Higgo on their squad: over/under 5.5?   One week down and 10 more to go in the Summer Segment.
