History has a way of making grand entrances and nothing short of that occurred on Sunday - in more ways than one. As Kevin Streelman made history on the back nine at the the Travelers Championship on Sunday - birdying the final 7 holes to win - so also was history made in the fantasy world. First up, Better Than Most played his most consistent tournament of the season by leading the entire way and closing the door at the end to win his league leading 6th tournament. His lead was no bigger than 4 points at the end of any of the first 3 rounds as contenders nipped at his heels the whole way. Ryan Moore would set the pace for him jumping out to an early lead but gave up ground on the final day. It would be K.J. Choi who proved to be the difference maker though as his 2nd place finish would give Better Than Most 10 bonus points and edge out runner up Buddy The Bull by just 8 points. Better Than Most kicked off the spring by winning the segment's first tournament and now he's closed it out by doing the same. He's won 2 out of the last 3 tournaments and takes an overall 3rd place into the Summer Segment.
As Streelman made his history there was another history being made on Sunday - even repeating itself. Buddy The Bull started the season off in a funk and closed out the Winter Segment in a mire. The Spring saw his rebirth though and The Bull became a contender. He would fight tooth and nail for each point and found himself in a position to make a final push in the final tournament with a chance to become the segment champ. Sitting back from Strangers by 4 points The Bull would make his move early by staying close on the heels of the leader - sticking with Bradley's guns the whole way and Day's for all but 1 round. As the dust began to settle and even Baby Draw could not be ruled out for a late charge it became apparent though that for the second straight segment a Coffey would be crowned. The Bull went on to outpace Strangers by 42 points in the Travelers and lay claim to the title of Spring Segment Champ. This marks The Bull's 2nd top 3 in 2 starts and 10th overall. It was a steep road to climb but history now has a new name to add to it's books. Congrats to the Spring Segment Champ Buddy The Bull.
Jowls played a solid tournament and claimed a third place finish by scoring 150 points and got his 2nd top 3 finish of the season. He's shown flashes of brilliance before but they seem to be few and far between. Snedeker and Choi would propel Jowls to the finish as he made up considerable ground in the final round to claim a top 3 finish.
With the close of the Spring Segment and the top three finishers - The Bull, Strangers, Baby Draw - dominating the segment it seems likely they will continue their hot streak in the summer. But perhaps past contenders will rise to the occasion to take them down a peg. Fairway to Heaven once showed the promise of a young Tiger Woods but has fallen off the pace as of late.The Artist (aka Rusty Cage) once lead the entire league as his youthful exuberance captured the imaginations of everyone who watched him perform. Freeside is tied for the most top 3 finishes in the league yet he has not quite lived up to the hype... yet. Perhaps an unknown will charge from the pack this summer to make a name for themselves. Show and Dough or Night Putting have the talent - do they have the will? Or perhaps history has a wry enough sense of humor and will see the rise of yet another Coffey to become segment champ. Lafferty Daniel Gilmore Happy could be a black horse. Everyone is even as the Summer Segment is off to a fresh start at this week's Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Maryland. Even Tiger is gonna be there! It's going to be another horse race - let the festivities begin.
