Eat My Grind ends 2 year drought with win at the Sony

All the way over in Hawaii where there is no threat of winter, nor nuclear winter for the time being, things got dramatic in what was the longest playoff match in professional golf since 2012. While Patton Kizzire's victory over James Hahn after 6 somewhat lackluster playoff holes seems like a lot of extra golf it only ranks 10th in longest playoff matches all time. The longest ever playoff took place at the 1949 Motor City Open between Carey Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum. Both players were still tied after 11 holes when, by mutual agreement due to darkness, they were declared co-winners of the tournament (talk about anti-climactic!).

The First Timers racket put up a good show as well with a winner finally emerging and quenching what was a 2-year winless drought with his last coming at the 2016 Honda Classic. Eat My Grind has been grinding it out since then but has experienced a slump of epic proportions. After a very respectable rookie season in 2016 where he collected two championships and finished with a solid showing in the FedExCup Playoffs he fell off the map in 2017, not even appearing inside the Top 3 once all season. But now, after consecutive Top 3s to start the 2018 season he looks to be back in the saddle. Congrats to Eat My Grind for keeping the faith - the countless hours on the fantasy range have finally put him back in the spotlight. 

Look Ahead: Winter Segment

The PGA Tour has a few new faces joining the regular ranks of weekly grinders and a new tournament to the roster with the Corales Punta Cana to wrap up the winter segment. As fantasy folk adjust to the new scoring and payout format we'll have a good stretch of introductory tournaments throughout the winter to get comfy. The first big event on our calendar will take place in early March as the WGC head to Mexico once again with a bigger payout for the fantasy winner. 

With no payouts to second or third place each week it's all or nothing in pursuit of that weekly $20 paycheck. At the end of each segment there's a $40 payout awaiting the winner along with 4 major payouts of $35, The Players Championship payout of $25 and FedExCup Playoff payouts escalating each week come September. 

The Jackson Cup awaits the ultimate winner of the First Timers League with your name engraved on the hallowed cup for all time. Make sure you're within striking distance when the showdown comes around in the final month of play for your chance at fantasy golf immortality. 

Next Up: Career Builder Challenge in La Quinta, CA

Last year it was MR. SLUMAN and Tourball who took down the Career Builder to claim a joint victory at the three course tournament. They strolled the fairways of the Stadium Course, Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta CC to capture this one. They're both back again this year and looking for the first successful title defense of each of their careers but it'll be a tall task indeed.
