Here Ye! Here Ye!
A Proclamation from The Commissioner:
Let it be known
That on this day
The second of August,
The Year of our Lord
Two thousand and fifteen ,
The Good Dr. Vijay and his Antler Spray,
After heartily overcoming such odds
As presented against him,
Didst thus finally overcome and conquer.
A grinder he hath been
But a victor he hath become.
Last Sunday marked the close of the Quicken Loans National in Gainesville, VA where Troy Merritt won his first ever PGA event. How coincidental indeed that a first timer should win the tournament as events in the fantasy world would mirror the real world nearly putt for putt. Last Sunday also marked the 29th week of the season and for one league member it marked 29 long weeks of 'almosts' and 'nearly theres'. Dr. Vijay's Antler Spray started the season off in good form - scoring 5 Top 10s in his first 7 tournaments. In week 3 he finished runner up and book-ended week 12 with a couple Top 3s. The pundits were foaming at the mouth as they began penning odes to the rise of the good Doctor. But their predictions fell flat as the weeks went on and the Winter turned to Spring and the Spring to Summer. Questions started to come in as to whether or not Dr. Vijay's could close. Following the RBC Canadian Open Vijay's would have 15 Top 10s and 4 Top 3s (2 runner ups). He's finished in the Top 10 in all 3 Majors so far with a runner up at the Open Championship. But with all these accolades and no victories many were starting to wonder if Vijay's would every climb that lofty peak. But if nothing else the Dr. was a grinder and with the prediction from the Commish last week that one of the league's grinders was on the verge of prevailing Vijay's took it as a sign and charged the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course with a new purpose. Subbing only once he trusted his instinct and oh was it right. All his starters would finish 4th or better and his lone sub in the 4th round to get 4th place finisher Justin Thomas into the action was a last minute fail safe to collect any bonus points that might come his way. The sub ended up costing him 4 points as Thomas's round was 2 strokes worse than his counterpart and he garnered no bonus points. His trust in his guns though would prove the difference maker though as others made untimely subs and missed major points while Dr. Vijay's rode the good rounds all the way home. He would come away with an 8 point victory in what the media is decrying as his crowning achievement. It took exactly 209 days for Dr. Vijay's Antler Spray to finally close but it only makes it all the sweeter as he raises the Quicken Loans National Trophy and paycheck with his first win of the Season. Hopefully it won't take another 7 months to do it again. Congrats Dr. Vijay's.
It was a counterpart of Dr. Vijay's who gave chase the whole way. But this counterpart has already gone the distance more than once. Baby Draw Part Two had a rousing round on Sunday to have a run at his third championship of the season but he would come up just short after yet another powerful performance. He has very convincing numbers so far this season and is arguably the most consistent player on Fantasy Tour as he finished in the top tier for the 2014 Season and is currently battling Kikakee Tees and Talkeetna98 for 4th place (the last spot to pay out). The Baby has 16 Top 10s and 6 Top 3s which puts him in the top tier of finishers no matter what at this point (baring a complete meltdown). A successful season in no way limits his desire to get another victory this year so look for The Baby to contend deep into the Summer.
And as if there weren't enough drama already Talkeetna98 entered the battle and fought tooth and nail for Top 3 finish finish. He nearly missed it though as he made only 2 4th round subs and they were both the wrong move. If he'd stuck with his guns he would have come away with his first every runner-up finish. But instead he'll take his fourth 3rd place finish and 5th Top 3 with 1 win and 15 Top 10s to go with it. He currently sits in 6th for the Season where he's just 30 points back from a paid position and in 12th for the Segment at just under 100 points back from the top. Look for Talkeetna98 to keep up the onslaught.
Notables:
Whiny Little Pitch enters the picture again after a 5 week absence from the Top 10. She grinded this one out - missing some big rounds that would have propelled her towards the top - but she stayed the course with her A and C group starters which proved to be the difference maker to get her such a high finish. This is Whiny's first Top 10 of the Summer and 11th overall with 4 Top 3s. She's fairly out of the running for the Summer Segment but has had an outstanding season so far, especially for a team who joined the league 3 weeks late.

Hogan's Heros snags another Top 10 - his 15th of the year - and tries to keep pace with front runner Gophers but it might be a case of too little too late as Gophers has a 133 point lead with just 7 weeks to go. Hogan's would have to make up 19 points per week on Gophers to have a shot at the Season title. And since everyone loves an underdog story it's a safe bet that the entire league is looking for Hogan's to make a run at it. But the stoic Gophers is unlikely to give ground as he continues to build the defenses higher and higher.
Night Putting and That's Wet both equal Hogan's for a T5 finish. Night Putting is one of those occasional competitors as he's racked up 10 Top 10s but ranks a dismal 21st for the Season. That's Wet continues to be a threat but his influence on the league leader is waning as he's slipped back in the standings. He's currently in 3rd place for the year but ironically has only 1 win to his name.
The Gophers and Tomte tied for 8th as Tomte keeps her late season rally going. This is her 3rd Top 10 in a row with a runner-up finish thrown in for good measure. She's still in the running for the Summer Segment but will have increase the ferocity of her charge if she's going to get there. Gophers gets his league leading (by far) 22nd Top 10 of the Season and continues to be dominant. After winning the Winter Segment he did not rest on his laurels but has kept up the pace and is the huge favorite for the Season Championship. Of the 29 tournaments played so far Gophers has only missed the Top 10 a total of 7 times.
Strangers and Show & Dough wrap things up in a tie for 10th at the Quicken Loans National and both are solid league veterans who know how to rack up the stats. The Show has a slash line of 12/3/0 and is still looking for that elusive first win. After the Commish predicted that one of the league's grinders would get their hard sought after victory perhaps it's her turn to capitalize on the prophesy. Strangers has a slash line of 10/4/1 which by most account is a successful season. The defending Season champ would love one more win to go with those stats so look for a late charge in the Fedex Cup Playoffs from the champ.
The Season will only get more intense at this point and there's no turning back now. This week the boys run head first into the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at the Firestone CC in Akron, OH. It's sure to be a who's who of top golfers in the world and with roster picks running low and weeks running out there's no holding back now. Everyone's roster is sure to be filled with oodles of star power. For those teams who are looking for higher ground the time is now as any points that will be made up for the Season or Segment has to start here. To the bags!
