A familiar trend is taking shape again in the Spring Segment which also occurred during the winter. So far 6 of 7 winners have come from the top 6 teams - Night Putting being the one exception so far this spring - which closely mirrors that of the Winter Segment which saw 9 of 12 winners from the top 6. Certain teams have figured out how to win and they are taking full advantage of it. In the Byron Nelson Championship last week it was Strangers who put some distance between himself and the field early and never slowed down. Not making a single substitution he went on to outpace the closest competitor by 15 points and only posted 1 round above par (Palmer's +1). This marks his second win of the spring and he has now dominantly asserted himself atop the standings occupying 3rd place. It is also his 4th top 3 finish in 7 starts. It was no surprise that front runner Baby Draw gave chase all the way to the end but came up just short - taking 2nd place and his 4th top 3 this spring. Baby still sits at #1 this spring and doesn't look as though he'll give up his spot easily. Great Scott poked his head up from amidst the crowd and snagged a 3rd place finish. But it's been a mediocre spring so far for Great Scott after such a promising winter. He has 2 top 3s in his last 3 starts though so maybe a turnaround is just ahead. The field is definitely spreading and the ability to score points is apparent. The top 6 teams averaged a score of 172.5 while the bottom 6 teams managed to scrape together a 134.2 average. It proved difficult for anyone to pick a winner last week as only 4 teams managed to get just 5 bonus points with a third place finisher.
A Cinderella story was not to be last week as low man on the totem pole Lafferty Daniel Gilmore Happy made an early push but couldn't hold on. He vied for the lead over the first couple rounds but fell back after making the wrong substitutions at the wrong time. He is still seeking his first top 3 of the year.
Baby Draw has pulled alongside Better Than Most and is prepared to unleash a broadside into his hull. Both are tied at 2,768 for total season points and it's the first time anyone has caught Better Than Most since early in the winter when Great Scott was actually a contender. The season is only half over though.
Night Putting has been hit or miss so far this spring but has put two respectable starts together over the last two weeks - getting bonus points in both tournaments he looks like he's honed his ability to pick a top finisher. He still continues to languish however in the number 9 spot.
Jowls has done some cooling off as of late. He started out the spring with some pep in his step by averaging a finishing spot of 3.6 over his first 3 tournaments. Since then he has averaged a finish of 8.5 over he last 4 starts. He's not far out of the mix however and a couple good weeks would put him back in contention.
Next week is the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth, TX. It shouldn't be a surprise to see the team who picks top 3 finishers taking the victory in the Lone Star state this week.
