Last week's Northern Trust Open was a roller coaster and one with an unorthodox ending. Due to Yahoo's inability to install a tie-breaking option there was a surprising finish to go with a week of firsts. In last week's recap I put forward the question of who would be the first repeat winner of the year. Although technically a tie, the powers that be (Yahoo) has determined that there are two winners from the Northern Trust and so we have first time winner Baby Draw, who pulled off a miraculous final round come back to garner 70 points and a share of the win, and our first repeat winner of the season - Better Than Most! In charge of the tournament the whole way, Better Than Most! looked to be on autopilot heading towards his second victory of the season. Due to a varied field of unexpected players finishing in the top ten it was unlikely any one team had the wherewithal to draft the tournament's #1 and #2 finishers. However, that's exactly what Baby Draw did. Cementing a sharedwin in the final round with Watson and Johnson playing well throughout. Johnson, Spieth and Walker provided the firepower for Better Than Most! but it was only Johnson who was able to provide any bonus points. If either team had played English instead of Walker in the final round it would have been a solo victory.
Lafferty Daniel & Gilmore Happy made notable progress finishing 4th - his highest finish in a tournament so far. He has yet to have a top 3 finish though but perhaps it's right around the corner.
Fairway to Heaven is knocking on the door pretty hard as he has accrued 3 top 3 finishes in a row. In a recent interview he claimed to have a top secret draft technique and it seems to be working out.
Strangers fell to 4th overall in the standings after both his A group players missed the cut. Finishing with a meager 104 points, not a single player on his roster finished south of 20th so a rebound performance is needed to regain lost ground.
Buddy the Bull seemed to be playing bingo with his roster as he made more substitutions than a Bruin's game. He made the call to bench Johnson in the final round which seemed to be a good idea - until he teed off. He managed a 5th place finish however and stayed steady at 6th overall but has yet to make a move for higher ground.
Your Name Here had a frustrating week after having 7 rounds of even par golf or worse. He still holds the top spot in the standings for as many weeks as I can remember but his lead is dwindling and he hasn't had a win since week #1. Perhaps another name change will do the trick.
Freeside Links seems to be languishing in mediocrity as he is the second highest ranked team without a win (only Buddy the Bull ranks higher in that category). He does have 3 top 3 finishes which is a plus but 2 of them came in the first two weeks. With only 4 top 10 finishes in a league of 12, perhaps some more range time is in order.
Night Putting looks as if he's making strides in the right direction but missed the target last week after having 8 out of 12 rounds at even par or worse. He holds down the 8th spot on the standings but is only 196 points back of first. A few strong finishes would turn things around.
Jowls just might be the worst team in the league despite being 3 spots above last place. He has the most finishing scores below 100 (3), the lowest scoring average when not counting zeros and the dropped score (118), and has only 1 finishing score above 150. Having some work to do is putting it lightly.
Show and Dough, the league's lone lady, has been battling the disadvantage of 2 consecutive zeros to start the season but has been making headway since. A third week win and several respectable finishes has her still in second to last but poised to make her move. She had great foresight in drafting McGirt last week but that's where it ended. With 9 rounds at even par or better for her squad, the only action McGirt saw for her was a two over final round.
Papa Gino rounds out the league and currently holds down a respectable last place at the moment. Perhaps a lack of attention is to blame as he "decided" to go with the same squad as the week before. It could have worked out for him if most of his players had actually decided to play in the tournament. A long season ahead though gives plenty of time to play catch up.
This week is a bye week as the WGC takes center stage and apparently Yahoo has no idea how to score this tournament for fantasy teams. So they did what they thought was best by ignoring it. Enjoy the week off. The following week is the Honda Classic in Palm Beach, Florida. The West Coast swing is over and tee times will now be on eastern standard time for a while as the Florida swing begins.
