Quick-Update Recap:
It was an eventful week in the world of golf as all eyes
(watching NBC) fixed their gaze on Rio for the return of golf to the Olympics. The
field was absolutely packed with the game’s superstars as Julien Quesne,
Siddikur Rahman, Danny Chia and Espen Kofstad electrified the crowd and put on
a clinic of over-par golf. A surprising finish was taking shape as the two of
the world top-10 players were duking it out as they separated themselves from
the talented field. In the end, it was Justin Rose who snagged the gold while
Henrik three putted his way to a silver (apparently he was just trying to medal
as 2nd place in golf is a huge honor). “Golly Matty” Kuchar couldn’t
have been happier with a third place finish as he took home bronze for the US.
State-side, the John Deere Classic dominated the airwaves as
anyone not watching the Olympics surely was watching the star studded field at
TPC Deere Run. On Fantasy Tour, everyone seemed to like Ryan Moore and the
gritty American would pay dividends as he came away with a two stroke victory
over Ben Crane. It came down to the wire for First Timers as DaHoffa and
Michelson were neck and neck down the stretch. They’d finish that way as well
with the league’s third shared victory this year.
DaHoffa has solidly put himself in the running for the
Segment title as he’s just 25 points back of leader Short Strokes. Michelson
made a huge charge up the leaderboard in the season standings as she gained 32
points on Short Strokes whose lead is down to 44. Short Strokes has to like his
position though as he leads the Summer Segment and Season entering the home
stretch. With just 5 weeks left to play he’s still the favorite. But with the
Fedex Cup Playoffs on the horizon and minimized fields in the mix anything
could happen.
Baby Draw seems to have third place wrapped up and just
needs to hold strong to secure his payout. The battle is still raging for 4th
and 5th place as Gophers, Whiny, Papa and DaHoffa are trading blows
each week for position. DaHoffa made up the most ground with 216 points but remains
in 7th place. Papa managed to snag a Top 10 finish but lost ground
(2 points) on his nearest competitor Whiny and he stayed in 6th
place. Whiny has the final payout spot at the moment and sent a message to the league
with a strong T5 finish that she’s not going down without a fight. Gophers
maintained his 4th place position but lost ground overall as he was
the only one from this group to not get a Top 10 last week. His lead over Whiny
is down to 11 and is going to be living week to week. Talkeetna98 and Halve
Ouimet remain as long shots to make a run for the 4th and 5th
spots but stranger things have happened.
The biggest surprise last week was the out-of-nowhere
performance by Chubbs Peterson as the 33rd ranked team snagged his
highest finish since week 7 in February. Haney’s
Got A Gun continues to outperform expectations and has become a serious
contender for the Summer Segment. Night Putting had a solid showing as he
finished 3rd and captured his 3rd Top 10 and highest finish since
week 16 at the Valero Championship. Tomte has been showing some form as of late
and seems to be motivated by criticism in the press and her Summer Segment
defense. She got her 3rd Top 10 in a row and is barely in range of
the Segment lead at 72 points back.
Race for the Jackson Cup
The race is heating up as Short Strokes, who had been
holding Michelson at bay for so long, saw his lead nearly cut in half and is
starting to feel the pressure. Michelson pulled out a win exactly at the moment
she needed it most and made a huge dent in her deficit. With just 5 weeks to go
this is the closest race the league has ever had for the Jackson Cup. Two
rookies dueling it out. Michelson has the momentum at the moment but can Short
Strokes answer? The Wyndham Championship is up next as the last regular season
event on Tour before the Fedex Cup Playoffs begin. Five weeks remain for glory as
both competitors put it into overdrive.
