Jowls wins 3rd as the Summer Segment kicks off

It's the beginning of the end as the season's final Segment has kicked off. The month of July has always served as a delineation of sorts, a time marker of greater significance to sports fans as major developments start to take shape. The All-Star break for MLB is upon us as the baseball season is half over, the first quarterbacks will report for training camp by month's end while the PBA (Professional Bowler Association) kicks off July 31 with a mixed doubles event in Houston, TX. But perhaps more importantly is the event of the season on the PBR as super star bull rider Joao Ricardo Vieira kicks off the Touring Pro Division at the Bud Light Bull Madness rodeo - it's sure to be fun for the whole family. But perhaps a little lower on the significance totem poll is the Greenbrier Classic - an annual favorite on the PGA Tour but somewhat overshadowed this year by the Women's World Cup. Still, it boasted a solid field with yet another opportunity to win cash and valuable season points. 

The Greenbrier, being an event that doesn't always attract loads of superstar names, often proves to be a tricky tournament for us Fantasy Tour Pros as one must be more meticulous with their roster selections. A few big names were in attendance - Watson, Bradley, Reed - but in a tournament when the biggest name among the top 10 finishers was Kevin Kisner you know some daring picks would be in order. And league veteran Jowls would do just that. Never a fan of change, especially when it applies to his roster, he rode out his starting 4 horses the entire way.  His bold pick of Brendon Todd paved the way as he finished in 6th place at the Classic and landed Jowls a plethora of unexpected points. Kevin Kisner was the favorite pick among top finishers as he would finish in 2nd and garner many a team those 10 extra bonus points. It would be a photo finish however as the winner would be decided by a playoff duel with 2 Footer and Jowls looking on. If 2 Footer's Robert Streb won then 2 Footer would walk with his 3rd win. If anyone else won then Jowls would take his 4rd. The odds were in Jowls favor after regulation play was done as 4 players walked back to 16 to start the playoff. Unfortunately for 2 Footer Streb would be ousted on the first playoff hole and the win would be assured for Jowls. In a low scoring week where the winner finished well below 200 points it would be a case of the last man standing and Jowls mustered the stamina to outlast them all once again. Jowls ended his Spring Segment with huge win at the US Open and now opens the Summer with a strong statement that he'll be hunting down his first Segment Championship. Let the final games begin. Congrats Jowls.

It would be a close runner-up finish for the surging 2 Footer as he came up just 2 points short of his 3rd victory. 2 Footer has made 6 appearances inside the Top 10 in the last 9 tournaments and has won 2 of them. He's surging at the right time as getting solid starts at the beginning of a Segment is key to making a run at the championship. He was the only team last week to get more than 10 bonus points as he picked 2 second place finishers (Streb and Kisner). He takes an impressive slash line of 9/3/2 into the Summer and is in 12 place overall. 

BevGin&Tonic is certainly making bold strides here to start the Summer off. He's now finished in back to back Top 3s with 3rd place finishes in both. Never subbing once he put things on autopilot and trusted his staff. He would finish 6 points off the lead as he was searching for his 2nd win on the year. Bev has a habit of falling off the pace with inattention though so we'll see if he can right the ship this Segment with a full segment long charge.

The only teams to finish in the Top 10 who have not yet recorded a win were Night Putting and Dr. Vijay's Antler Spray. This is bad news for those teams who are still in hot pursuit of their first win. The big names have come out to hunt this Segment and winning will be even more challenging. 

Kikakee Tees is a familiar site snuggled close to the top. He finished in 4th place with a solid performance and beings his pursuit of a Segment Title on the right foot. After coming so close in both the Winter and Spring Segments he is hungry. Time will tell if he still has the stamina to keep up the pace over the summer. Currently he ranks 2nd in Winners Picked so he'll need to keep that going.

The Gophers never sleeps as he racks up yet another Top 10 and now has 19 on the Season - 6 more than his closest competitor. He's certainly a favorite this Summer after winning the Winter Segment and could become the first player in league history to win multiple Segments in a single season. 

Baby Draw is another team who's a perennial competitor and has proven his grit by accumulating 14 Top 10s and 5 Top 3s and is ranked 2nd in both categories. Yet despite all this fame he has yet to win his own Segment crown. He's come close and definitely has what it takes but somehow it keeps alluding him. He'll get back on the horse again this Summer to make yet another run at it. 

This week the gang heads to Illinois as the John Deere Classic hosts the Tour pros. It's another one of those smaller events but low and behold the biggest name in golf will be there. Jordan Spieth dusts off the battle sticks as he is by far the most favored man in the field. But who will be burning precious starts for Spieth this week when there are so many other important tournaments to save him for? Start drafting those rosters and hold the line as it's a long Summer ahead.
